OSSE Financial Aid Conference

Building College Access and Success for All DC Resident

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) held its 2nd Annual DC Financial Aid Conference on Thursday, January 19th, 2012, at the Kellogg Conference Center on the campus of Gallaudet University. The conference was part of OSSE’s ongoing effort to build college access and success for DC residents.

Sponsored by OSSE and the U.S. Department of Education’s College Access Challenge Grant, the conference was attended by 218 local college access professionals (a 20% increase from last year) including elementary, middle, high school and college counselors, advisors, admissions officers, higher education associations and educators from all eight wards and other local jurisdictions.

For the first time elementary and middle school counselors attended.  This is part of a joint initiative between OSSE and DC Public and Charter Schools to expose students and parents to college earlier in a child’s academic career and encourage the appropriate planning for postsecondary education.

The following workshops were available to conference attendees: FAFSA Training; DC OneApp Training; Accuplacer, Remediation & Dual Enrollment; Smart College Selection; Special Circumstances- Homelessness & Professional Judgments; College Preparation 101; The State of Federal Student Aid.
