OSSE Announces Pre-K Program Grant Awards

Six Community-Based Organizations Receive Nearly $100K in Funding for Early Childhood Programming

(Washington, D.C.) – The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is excited to announce the Pre-Kindergarten Program Grant awards to six grantees, some of which will service populations in Wards with a lesser concentration of providers. The Grants are awarded as a result of the Pre-K Enhancement and Expansion Act of 2008 (the Act). This year there are six (6) grantees:

  • Edward C. Mazique PCC (Ward 1)
  • Martha’s Table (Ward 1)
  • Bright Start (Ward 4)
  • The Geneva Ivey Day School (Ward 5)
  • Big Mama’s Children’s Center (Ward 7)
  • Dawn to Dusk (Ward 8)

OSSE awarded six (6) community-based organizations (CBOs) with $93,000 dollars to fund one (1) classroom each, a total award of $558,000 dollars. The purpose of the grant program is to establish Pre-K classrooms in the District that provide age-appropriate, high-quality early educational services to children. Awardees met high-quality standards and program requirements as defined by the Act. 


All children with verified residency in the District of Columbia and who are of Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) age are eligible to be served in the Pre-Kindergarten Program regardless of social-economic status. The Act defines the “Pre-K age” as children three (3) years of age on or before September 30th of the upcoming school year, or four (4) years of age, and children who become five (5) years of age after September 30th of the upcoming school year. This legislation is a key part of the OSSE’s goal to ensure that all District of Columbia children will be ready for school and that all District children receive an excellent education for success in the 21st century.


The District of Columbia is a model for Pre-K education, and remains committed to educating children at the earliest possible age. Pre-K programs are proven to bridge educational gaps by exposing more children to a research-based curriculum and classroom model. Approximately 442 Pre-K educational service providers currently serve 12,857 children, with the capacity to serve 15,908.
