The District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) has awarded $200,000 in grant funding to five school districts and organizations in the College, Credential & Career (C3) Ready Summer Initiative for middle and high school students. The grant initiative will serve 330 students entering grades 6 through 9. The programs, which vary in length, will give students the opportunity to gain in-person exposure to high-growth, high-wage career fields in DC and explore future secondary and postsecondary options.

The C3 Ready Summer Initiative builds upon citywide career and technical education (CTE) goals of establishing strong pathways toward high-wage, high-growth career fields in the District of Columbia. Grantees in 2016 will sponsor trips to Howard University, the George Washington University, and area public and public charter high schools. Students will get hands-on exposure to career fields including information technology (IT) and business and marketing, among others. Students will also develop skills to help them be successful in high school by working on goal setting, organizational skills, and managing independent project work. This year, OSSE prioritized applicants serving students with disabilities as they transition to high school.

“The C3 Ready Summer Initiative engages District students in fun summer programming that also allows them to explore connections between their personal strengths and their high school, college and career options,” said Dr. Antoinette Mitchell, assistant superintendent of Postsecondary and Career Education at OSSE. “In targeting the middle grades, OSSE hopes to foster a college-going, career-focused mindset so that our young people enter high school with their sights set on graduation and the next phase of their education.”

C3 Ready Summer Initiative grant recipients for summer 2016 are: City Gate, Inc., Higher Achievement, The Judah Project, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), and Two Rivers Public Charter School. Programs will begin in late June and early July and will run for between four and six weeks.
