This annual award recognizes public school teachers for their outstanding teaching in the District of Columbia and professional leadership within and beyond the classroom. The winner will compete for the National Teacher of the Year.

All DC teachers who have achieved career status are eligible for consideration. Parents, students, staff, or teachers may nominate teachers for this award. Self-nominations are also acceptable.

  • Demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to student achievement;
  • Inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn;
  • Have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues;
  • Play an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school; and
  • Be poised, articulate, and possess the energy to withstand a busy schedule.

Additionally, DCPS nominees must have received a ‘Highly Effective’ rating on their most recent evaluation.

Nomination forms are available at http://osse.dc.gov/service/district-columbia-teacher-year and can be submitted via email no later than 5 pm, Friday, October 3, 2014 to the attention of Marion Nieto at  [email protected]  or hand-delivered to: Office of the State Superintendent of Education, C/O Marion Nieto, 810 First Street, N.E. 5th Floor, Washington, DC 20002.
