(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- The second annual Let’s Move! DC – Children and Families Health Expo presented by the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Deanwood Recreation Center, located at 1350 49th Street, NE. Let’s Move! DC aims to encourage District youth to make healthier food choices and be more active throughout the day. The expo is free and open to the public.

For children and families, the expo will include cooking demonstrations, fishing and dance lessons, music, games and a farmers market. Streetball stars Hugh "Baby Shaq" Jones and Randy “White Chocolate” Gill will be on hand to sign autographs and take photos while the Street Basketball Association hosts clinics and skills exhibitions. Community organizations will also be available with information for families on healthy eating, early childhood education, and youth fitness and enrichment programs.

Let’s Move! DC is a local effort to answer the epidemic of childhood obesity, which First Lady Michelle Obama brought to the nation’s attention when she launched the national Let’s Move! campaign in 2010. The campaign has since united our country and rallied our communities, schools, and food manufacturers to take action.  Additionally, Let’s Move! DC aims to promote the D.C. Healthy Schools Act of 2010 that was designed to create a healthy school environment, regulate school meal nutrition, health, and physical education, promote physical activity, and support farm to school and school garden instruction.

Event partners and community organizers of Let’s Move! DC include: Street Wize Foundation, Diamond Dream Foundation, DC Hunger Solutions, Groundwork Anacostia River, DC State Athletic Association, Stratford University, DC Metro Maryland Saltwater Sport Fishermen’s Association, NFL Play 60,YMCA, First Tee, US Tennis Association, Chess Girls DC, Cor-Les Institute, and Opt 2 Move.
