District of Columbia Gears Up for College Application Week

Thursday, October 29, 2015
DC Students Aim to Submit More Than 5,000 College Applications

More than 2,500 District of Columbia graduating seniors will receive assistance navigating the complex college admissions process next week as a part of DC College Application Week. Sponsored by the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), DC College Application Week will run November 2-6, 2015, at 45 DC public and public charter high schools as well as community-based organizations across the District to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students who pursue a postsecondary education.

Now in its fourth year administering DC College Application Week, OSSE piloted the program in 2012 in order to increase college opportunities. Last year, 24 high schools and 2,029 students participated completing 4,919 applications. This year, OSSE is hopeful that each high school senior will submit at least one application.

DC College Application Week host sites are prepared with resources and volunteers to encourage student participation by planning College Application week events, offering best practices for searching for colleges and writing admissions essays; helping with transcript requests; and providing assistance in locating funding to pay for college through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the DC Tuition Assistance Grant (DC TAG), and other scholarships and grants.

DC College Application Week is coordinated by OSSE in partnership with the College and Credential Completion Network (C3N), District of Columbia Public Schools, Friendship Tech Public Charter School, the University of the District of Columbia Community College, DC College Success Foundation, DC College Access Program, and the United Negro College Fund.
