DC State Board Schedules Vote on State Accountability Plan and ESEA Waiver Extension; Invites and Encourages Public Comment

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

Dear LEAs:

Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with members of the DC State Board of Education (SBOE) to discuss the District’s ESEA Flexibility Waiver. During this meeting, I shared key components of the District’s proposed amendments to the waiver, which helps accelerate improvement of student outcomes in a way that is meaningful and appropriate for DC students. Subsequently, the Board has scheduled a vote on the District’s accountability plan (as amended in the waiver extension request) on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 5:30pm, Room 220 South. This meeting is your opportunity to provide your elected Board members with feedback on the proposed amendments to the waiver.

As you know, a critical component of the waiver is whether the 2013-2014 Science assessment results should impact accountability classifications for the 2014-2015 school year. The District’s proposal is based on several factors, including significant input from LEAs on the impact of the SBOE’s recent adoption of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Therefore, we are recommending the delay of the inclusion of science from accountability classifications until a new assessment has been implemented and a new baseline established. LEAs who wish to comment at the meeting are asked to notify State Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected] and furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business the Monday prior to the meeting. They should also bring fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting and are encouraged to submit one (1) electronic copy in advance.

If you have questions or need additional information about this topic, please contact Iris Bond-Gill at [email protected]. As always, thank you for support as we strive to raise the quality of education for all DC residents.
