DC School Garden Tour
We are kicking off Healthy Schools Week with an adventure to discover three of the absolute best school gardens in the area-- Watkins ES, St. Coletta, and Mundo Verde PCS.
There are many school gardens tucked away throughout the District, quietly teaching DC's youth about plants, nutrition, soil, and where their food really comes from. Join BicycleSPACE and The School Garden Program at the Office of the State Superintendent of Education on a ride around the city to experience a few of these gardens, and see what beautiful, creative learning spaces they are. Some are newer, some more developed, but they all could use some help from someone like you -- donations will go a long way!
The event will start at the shop where participants will gather and depart together to tour the city, hopping from one school to another accompanied by a bicycle sound system that adds to the fun.
Upon arriving at the first school, we will eat a tasty breakfast generously provided by Whole Foods Market P Street.
And as we go on, we will learn from each school about a project they need to accomplish in order to make their garden an even better learning environment. Throughout the tour, we would like you to keep in mind which school inspires you the most, or looks to have the most potential. And, at the last school, over a delicious free lunch from Chipotle, we will request donations and then vote on which school's project will receive all of what has been collected. You will decide which school will benefit!
We hope you join us for a beautiful day of gardens and biking, and enjoy helping out a local school garden in a tangible way! This is a great opportunity to learn about some of the wonderful school gardens in the city and help make a big difference for some lucky kids. Please know that, later, you will be able to return to see what your contribution helped create!
Seeing and learning about different school gardens in the city is very enjoyable by bike. For an idea of what to expect from this event, check out footage from a previous school garden tour:
