Virginia F. Crisman

General Counsel
Virginia Crisman was appointed General Counsel to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education in May 2011, following several years as an assistant attorney general in the Office of General Counsel. She possesses a broad range of legal experience and expertise, with a diverse background in both the public and private sectors.
Virginia brings to OSSE experience in juvenile justice law, as well as District and Federal education law and regulation. She served for 6 years as an Assistant Court Monitor in the Jerry M. case, focusing on education and juvenile rehabilitation. She has extensive experience in corporate law (with a Masters of Law in Securities (LLM) from Georgetown University) including experience in private practice as well as the Federal government, having served as the Deputy General Counsel at the US Commodities Futures Trading Commission. Early in her career she served as an attorney on the US Senate Judiciary Committee, the Securities and Exchange Commission. She also worked pro bono drafting rules governing the Legal Services Corporation at its creation.
Virginia is a District resident and has served on several boards including the Women’s Board for the former Hospital for Sick Children, and as Chairman of the Board for the National Child Research Center, both in Washington DC.
